Fentanyl Test Strips (FTS): Updates from the Field

-

Coinciding with surges in fatal overdoses, the illicit drug supply has gotten increasingly unpredictable. A large portion of the increase in overdose deaths is associated with fentanyl, fentanyl analogs, and other novel synthetic opioids. Despite the unpredictability of the illicit drug supply, people who use drugs care about their health. Using immunoassay fentanyl testing strips (FTS) designed for urine to directly check drugs for the presence of fentanyl is an example of the creativity of people who use drugs (PWUD) and their commitment to maximizing safety in the context of uncertainty.

Originally popularized in the US by PWUD several years ago, FTS have recently gained local, state, and federal government support and funding. Because of this, access has rapidly expanded. While this very simple technology is an important component of a robust overdose prevention plan, FTS guidance, instruction, and application varies.

During this 90-minute webinar, we will review what FTS can and cannot do; advantages and disadvantages of various instructions; adaptations for environmental contexts and different drugs; strategies for minimizing user error; and address common misunderstandings, myths, and misperceptions.
