Impact of Proposed Federal Budget Cuts on Health Departments

Last Updated

The threat of significant federal funding cuts to public health programs has created growing uncertainty for state and local health departments. Proposed reductions and/or eliminations to CDC’s HIV prevention and surveillance programs, the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, and HOPWA would have far-reaching consequences for public health infrastructure and service delivery.

To understand the scope of these potential impacts, NASTAD conducted a jurisdictional impact survey assessing how health departments would be affected by reductions across HIV prevention and surveillance, viral hepatitis, Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP), and overdose prevention programs.

NASTAD published an issue brief that summarizes key findings from that survey, illustrating nationwide implications of the proposed cuts and underscoring the critical role of federal funding in sustaining HIV, hepatitis, and related public health programs.
